Birds possess great vocal abilities, which makes it fun to listen to them and to own. It is also very interesting to know how the birds communicate to each other and what sounds they produce. People who have devoted their life to studying birds claim that the diversity of the bird sounds is one of the most amazing subjects to learn.
It is believed that their environment has shaped their vocal abilities. The nightingale, one of the top aviary singers, holds up to 300 different love songs in his repertoire. The canary bird is known to take 30 mini-breaths a second to replenish its air supply. Sometimes, humans cannot even hear the sounds that birds produce.
The human ear cannot, for example, hear some of the cowbird's songs, as the notes are too high. The chaffinch may sing his song one half of a million times in a season.
Are their songs meant only for human pleasure? Certainly they are not. The sounds they produce help them to better communicate, just like the humans use language. It is especially important when the birds are at a long distance from each other or cannot see the counterpart because of the dense vegetation.
The birds have an unusual structure of powerful vocal equipment. The syrinx, which is the sound-producing organ in birds, contains membranes, which vibrate and generate sound waves when air from the lungs is passed over them. The more elaborate the system of vocal muscles is, the more complex are the songs that the birds produce.
