Among the birds of the world, there are some species that can boast amazing abilities for flying the fastest, diving the deepest, or adapting to the harshest conditions. The Arctic tern is one of these amazing creatures. This bird is believed to cover the longest distances during the migratory season when it flies at the distance of about 11,000 miles.
The hummingbird is another example of the amazing attributes of the aviaries. This tiny bird has the highest metabolism rate and its heartbeat is about 1,000 beats a minute. Who could imagine that the heart of this little creature can beat so fast!
Which of the birds is the fastest? Biologists believe that this is the peregrine falcon. Its dive has been timed at 180 mph. Although fast, the peregrine falcon is inferior to the great gray owl when it concerns hunting abilities. This bird species hunts entirely by sound and is a great success due to the unique super-stereo hearing.
Hearing is not the only sense that maintains the birds on the wild. The turkey vulture, for example, has the keenest sense of smell. It can easily detect food from about one-half of a mile. Surely, the great sense of smell makes the life of this bird much easier.
Let us remember that the sky is not the only residence of the birds. The aviaries know how to survive in the cold climate of the Arctic region and make the cold ocean their friend, not their enemy. Have a look at the Antarctic Penguins and you will see that these birds are the champions in diving. They are known to stay an astonishing 11 minutes under water during a dive. What keeps these birds alive in such conditions still remains a mystery.
