All the birds form and lay an egg covered in a protective shell that is then incubated outside the body. If the eggs are large, the female usually produces one egg, as more eggs would make flying difficult. The hummingbirds have the smallest eggs that are about 0.2 grams. The now extinct elephant bird is believed to have had the eggs of about 9 kilos.
Eggs frequently become the targets of various predators, as bird eggs are very nutritious due the high amount of protein in them. This makes the females guard their eggs. The eggs are usually durable, as they have to carry the weight of the female and should not break. It is interesting to know that the swan's egg can be broken with the pressure of about 26 pounds, whereas the ostrich's egg need 120 pounds of pressure to break.
Nests are aimed at saving the eggs from predators. The diversity of the bird nests is really amazing. They differ in shape, size, and the materials from which they are built. Moreover, females often choose the partner with which to mate; he relies on his ability to build a nest. More skillful nest builders have better chances for mating.
Some species have a chance to improve their skills continually, as they build the nests until the female will approve of it. Thus, the European house wren is known to construct up to 12 nests when seeking the female's approval. Some other birds, however, are less choosy in where they hatch the young.
