These birds are well- known for their habit drilling and pounding trees with their strong bills to obtain insect food. They lay from two to eight eggs and incubate the eggs for 11-17 days. The young are born blind and both parents carry for them. Woodpeckers are often seen in photos chipping away at a tree; a breeder hears this noise repetitively.
